What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name System, which is considered as the phonebook of the internet. Users use the domain names to access the information available online and browsers use Internet Protocols for the same. Whenever you type a URL in the web browser, your system will send a DNS request to the DNS server that will give you the IP address for that domain name.
The DNS server will tell you the particular address for that URL by translating it into IP addresses for letting the browsers load the internet resources.
Every device that is connected to the internet owns a specific IP address and that address is used by other machines to locate it. A DNS server is something that has the bindings of names and IPs and it will help you in finding those IP addresses from the names.
Why do we use DNS servers?
DNS servers are basically utilized to convert the domain name (used by the humans) into the IP address (used by the computer) on the internet. Being a human being confines you to certain restrictions when it comes to memorizing things and we can’t remember IP addresses that are being used for different websites. In order to sort this issue and make memorizing IP addresses easy, we use the concept of DNS servers that translates the hostname into something known as a computer-friendly IP address.
How does a DNS server work?
If a user wants to access a certain website, then as soon as he types the URL of that particular website in the browser, the system he is using will generate a request. The request will be made to the DNS server about the IP address. Once the DNS server responds, the user’s system can communicate with the actual server.
