In this video, we will be learning about how do you represent a fraction on a number line. Equal parts fractions for kids.
Math Bytes are short math videos that can help you remember math concepts. They are an excellent tool for anyone who wants to learn and explore.
Did you know that fractions can be represented on a number line?
We can represent any fraction on a number line by looking at its denominator and partitioning a whole into fractional parts.
Let’s take a look at an example.
If we wanted to represent ¾ on a number line, we would begin by identifying the denominator in our fraction.
Since our denominator is 4, we need to partition our whole into 4 equal parts.
The equal parts are represented by the number of spaces between each line and NOT by the lines.
From 0 to the whole number 1, we should have a total of 4 spaces between each line. So let's add lines to divide our whole into 4 equal parts.
If I add a line between 0 and 1 that creates two equal parts. If I partition each of the two equal parts into halves that gives me a total of 4 equal parts.
Now let's finish by representing the fractional parts on our number line.
Since each line represents 1 out of 4 equal parts in our whole, the second line would be 2 out of 4, the third line would be 3 out of 4 and the 4th line would be 4 out of 4 equal parts or 1 whole.
