Can a small publication with just 1,000 issues change the course of artistic photography?
Provoke magazine, with just three issues, revolutionized the art world in Japan. He challenged the dominant currents of his time and captured the spirit of his time in a global context that was rapidly emerging in Japan, but at the same time represented every country in the world. American culture flooded the island and forced its new generations to question who they were and what their culture was. At the same time, older generations were grappling with resentment and a very different notion of literature and art. Furthermore, Provoke brought back the ghost of the old European avant-garde movements in a context where they seemed extinct.
