This week, we've decided to tell you about all the models from Chinese auto brands that currently have no more than two production models.
As with the Lotus brand from our previous video, the German car brand Smart already has two models with nearly identical names in its modern history. These are Smart #1 and Smart #3. We'll go into more detail about them now. But before we do, it's worth noting that the actual owner of this brand is also the Chinese holding company Geely. The Germans from Stuttgart retain only a 10% stake, and the cars themselves are manufactured at a plant in China.
The Smart #1 electric crossover was the first model in the company's recent history. Therefore, the combination of the # (hash) symbol and a serial number in the name will be carried over to all future models. It's safe to say that this is a definite trend. Judge for yourself. We see similar naming patterns with other brands in the Geely holding portfolio. For example, Lynk & Co has the 01 model, and Zeekr has the 001 model.
The new Smart is 4.27 meters long, with a wheelbase of 2.75 meters. The crossover is built on the modular Sustainable Experience Architecture platform, which is currently used for almost all Geely electric vehicles.
The new model from the Smart auto brand has been given the simple name Smart #3. It would have been logical if the Smart #1 crossover, the first model in the company's new era, had immediately debuted as a model called Smart #2. However, Geely, which owns the former European brand, apparently reserved the #2 index for the next car. It's worth noting that the number 2 is considered particularly lucky and prosperous in China. Therefore, the model bearing this index should also be named after it.
The reason the "2" wasn't assigned to the new five-door model can be explained by the fact that it's not a completely new car, but a variation on last year's first model. Like the "1," the company classifies it as a Sports Utility Coupe, meaning Smart considers its "3" a coupe-crossover.
