Today in the Eco Wednesday section we'll talk about hedgehogs.
If you find a sleeping hedgehog on your property, do not rush to disturb it—interference could disrupt hibernation and endanger the animal's life.
Don't try to wake the hedgehog. If the hedgehog is in a safe place (under a bush, in thickets, under a building), leaving it alone is the best option. However, if its shelter is in a construction zone, you should move it to a safe place.
Do not feed or water it! During hibernation, a hedgehog's metabolism is almost completely stopped—food and water can be harmful. Do not disturb its shelter in winter. Do not open the box or check on the hedgehog—any disturbance can trigger premature awakening.
What not to do
moving the hedgehog to a warm room (house, apartment)—this will cause premature awakening;
feeding milk, fruit, or sweets
trying to "test" the hedgehog's condition with vigorous actions.
Remember: the best help is not to interfere with the natural process. If your hedgehog has found a safe place to hibernate, leave it alone—nature knows best.
