Let’s take a look inside what in-flight rest really means for long-haul airline pilots. 🌍
On ultra-long flights, we bring extra pilots so each one can take proper rest breaks in dedicated bunks - known as the crew rest area.
✅ Add one extra pilot → duty limit up to ~17 hours
✅ Add two extra pilots (“heavy crew”) → up to ~18 hours
On the 787, we’re lucky - we get Class 1 rest facilities: real bunks in a quiet space above the cabin. Each pilot rotates through planned, logged rest periods - usually 2–3 hours, sometimes even up to 6 on the longest flights.
It’s not optional - rest is regulated, monitored, and essential for safety. If rest requirements aren’t met, the flight duty limits are reduced. Safety always comes first. 🧭
