RICHARD RORTY: Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity
In 1989, Richard Rorty published his book Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity. It contains the keys to his ethical and political thought, as it presents the paradigmatic figure of this work: the "liberal ironist." The liberal ironist must be able to accept the "contingency" of his convictions, while remaining convinced that the only thing human beings have in common is their capacity for suffering, in response to which a new concept of "solidarity" must be extended.
Rorty presents all of this in the context of his "neopragmatism," rooted in the conviction that the pragmatic function of language is key to the search for new redescriptions that make us more capable of advancing, not only toward "Truth," but toward greater "Freedom."
