the work of Erich Fromm. I was blown away by the Art of Love. I immediately felt that his interpretation of 'Brotherly Love' was what I was trying to express with this song. I would love to articulate that in the structured and analytical way that Erich does but I am an abstract artist.
There is a poem I love by Seamus Heaney called 'Ceasefire', its about the Troubles in the North of Ireland. It's based on the sacking of Troy. That poem was in the back of my mind when writing this but there was a whirlwind of childhood/ young manhood memories there also. I will never forget that poem.
This song just happened, like all great songs it just emerged. The lyrics came to me in a flood and it felt like sometime I had been harbouring for a long time.
I felt that the video really depicted that, it reminded me of Shane Meadows films which have an underlying tone of sadness within all it's fury and reckoning.
The music video for 'Brotherhood' is a compilation of scenes from award winning short film 'The Fence' written and directed by William stone. Set in the early 1980's, a council estate boy growing up on the streets of Bristol has his motorcycle stolen the day he buys it.
The short has been re-imagined as a dream sequence, a memory of the boy's lost Brother.
