New road scheme at Exhibition Row
This could be the future of London road layouts. This scheme provides no boundaries and only notional areas for pedestrians and vehicles. As such everyone takes their time, is careful and has no "territory" to defend...nor conquer .
It's a hugely enjoyable experience to use as a cyclist and generates a real sense of participation. It helps that the area is an enjoyable place to visit, but only a matter of months ago this was a virtual racetrack with pedestrians scuttling for cover as cars rushed past in segregated lanes divided by a central reservation.
When you watch the video you can see cars now taking their time and looking out for other road users.
