The universe is made up primarily of hydrogen. The nature of its presence, whether reduced to its charged core or packed into a molecule, can reveal a great deal about the features of the Universe at the largest scale. As a result, astronomers are very interested in locating signals emanating from this element. By some margin, the light signature of uncharged atomic hydrogen can now be measured farther away from Earth than ever before. India's Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) has detected a signal with a huge 8.8 billion-year lookback time, or the time between light emission and detection. That provides us with a fascinating look back at some of the universe's earliest moments, which are currently estimated to be around 13.8 billion years old.
