Can you beat the entire Gothic Remake as a pure mage without ever investing a single Learning Point into Strength, Dexterity, bows, or melee weapons?
Absolutely—and in this guide I'll show you exactly how I did it.
I've seen a lot of people claim that a full mage build isn't viable and that you'll eventually be forced to switch to melee. After finishing the entire game as a pure mage, I can confidently say that's simply not true. If you understand how the magic system works and make good use of runes, scrolls, and permanent stat bonuses, a mage becomes one of the strongest builds in the entire game.
This guide covers the entire progression from the early game all the way to the final boss. We start with the Fire Bolt Rune, showing which enemies it absolutely destroys, including Scavengers, Molerats, Bloodflies, Goblins, Harpies, Snappers, Orc Dogs, Minecrawlers, human enemies, Orc Scouts, and even the Minecrawler Queen. I also explain which enemies you should avoid early on because of their high fire resistance, including Bloodhounds, Razors, Skeletons, Fire Lizards, Orc Warriors, and the Earth Golem, along with the best ways to deal with each of them without abandoning your mage build.
I'll also show you one of the strongest early-game power spikes by obtaining the Royal Armor, the hidden +20 Mana Ring, and the +30 Mana Amulet for a total of +50 Mana very early in the game. We also cover the best way to farm Northern Dark from Fortuno, how to permanently increase your Mana beyond the normal trainer limit, and why saving your permanent Mana potions until after reaching 100 Mana is one of the biggest mistakes most players make.
Once you unlock the Circle of Magic, the build really starts to shine. We go over my favorite runes, including Ball Lightning, Fireball, Ice Bolt, Ice Block, Light, Rain of Fire, Death to Undead, and finally Uriziel's Wave of Death. You'll also learn how the different mage factions provide access to different schools of magic and how increasing your Circle of Magic makes many of your existing runes even stronger.
One of the biggest sections of this guide focuses on overcoming the major roadblocks of a pure mage playthrough. I show you how to defeat Baal Lukor, how to solve the Earth Golem problem without ever investing in melee, where to find the hidden Summon Skeleton Scroll inside the snowy temple, and how to gain access to Xardas so you can unlock the late game.
Finally, we take a look at the strongest late-game strategies, including powerful summoning scrolls, Xardas' runes, the best robes for a mage, and my final character stats after completing the game as a full mage. By the end of the playthrough I had over 220 Mana, Circle of Magic VI, every important utility skill unlocked, and still had Learning Points left to spare—all without ever investing into Strength or Dexterity.
