At the beginning of the 20th century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world. It had a brilliant future ahead of it, destined to become a major power in the region. But instead, Argentina suffered failure after failure. The Great Depression. Meat prices collapsed. A crisis ensued, followed by complete chaos. Then the people voted for General Juan Perón, the most famous president in Argentina's history. Perón needed to somehow unite the country. And he knew that nothing could do this better than hatred of the enemy. The enemy was declared to be Great Britain. Perón began to blame the British for all of Argentina's problems. That the British were using them, preventing Argentina from developing and taking all the money. But also, Perón said, they stole something more important. Our lands, the Malvinas or Falkland Islands. And that's how these islands became a symbol. Something sacred, taken from Argentina. And as soon as they were returned, everything would immediately get better.
