Illumination Should Learn from Despicable Me 4's Mistakes. If Despicable Me 4 had been more focused, it could have used the Gru/Poppy storyline to better connect its various plots. Poppy and Margot's setup never fully pays off, and her leading Gru back into villainy could have added compelling elements to his relationship with Lucy or his rivalry with Maxime. Future movies in the series need to avoid the disjointedness seen in Despicable Me 4 and return to the strong narrative focus that earlier films mastered. The first Despicable Me was a surprisingly grounded character-driven story that balanced emotional depth with its cartoonish elements. By refocusing on that approach, the series could reach its former heights. The Gru and Poppy storyline in Despicable Me 4 had potential but lacked enough focus and screen time to truly resonate emotionally. It should have been the main focus instead of getting sidetracked by goofy side plots. While Despicable Me 4 had a solid central story, it didn't give it the attention it deserved.
