A man came to the clinic with recurring genital warts three weeks after several removals with a solution. The patient didn't know which solution he used to remove the warts.
Many solutions contain acids and alkalis, have an unstable consistency, and, when spread over the skin's surface, can cause superficial burns and extensive scarring. These solutions are not suitable for removing large warts, as they do not penetrate deep into the growths. Since the human papillomavirus is present not only in the warts but also in the surrounding skin, recurrence occurs quite quickly.
A clinic examination revealed scars on the patient's glans penis from self-removal of condylomas. Small genital warts were present on the pubic area and glans.
At the clinic, the patient underwent the following tests:
— HPV testing on the surface of the condylomas and the inside of the urethra.
— Tests for concomitant sexually transmitted infections.
— Interferon status and an immunogram (if the immune system is hyperactive, immunostimulants are not necessary).
— To stimulate antibody production, an HPV vaccination is necessary. Generally, vaccination is best started at 11-12 years of age.
During treatment, genital warts are removed. Topical treatment can also be added. The patient underwent three sessions of photodynamic therapy, spaced weekly.
Only a comprehensive treatment approach is the most promising for combating HPV.
