In this tutorial, we'll see how to repair a corrupted video file (e.g., MP4) using VLC on Windows or macOS. And yes, while VLC is popular for its video and audio playback features, many of its built-in tools remain unknown.
The problem: A corrupted video capture consistently crashes the Final Cut Pro X editing software.
The solution: In this video, we'll unveil one of VLC's little-known features, the built-in video encoder. Using it, we'll completely re-encode the video to obtain a valid video file in MP4 format.
The result: Once re-encoded, the video can now be used in the editing software. Furthermore, in our example, we notice that the encoded file is much smaller than the source file (5 MB versus the original 200 MB). There is no discernible loss of quality with the chosen settings (H264 for video, MP3 for audio).
Limitations: Sometimes, sections of video or audio track, varying in length, are missing when opening a corrupted video file. Except in rare cases, video repair does not reconstruct the missing information. Clearly, there is a good chance that the images or sounds missing before the file was repaired will remain missing after the file is repaired.
VLC: Windows VS MacOS: In this video, I explain the procedures on both operating systems. During the tutorial, I question the possible differences in results between these two versions of VLC. In the tutorial, I indicate that the Windows version gives better results in my case without providing further details. The explanation is as follows: with identical settings, the Mac version generates an .m4v file and not an MP4 file. But this doesn't pose any particular problems. However, once in Final Cut Pro, I noticed a green band at the bottom of the video throughout the entire video from the Mac version. No problems were observed with the file generated by the Windows version of VLC.
