Premium Icons from Damascene Gallery: The launch of the icon we always wanted to make
When Damascene Gallery Icons launched in 2010, we had a vision of what type of mounted icon we wanted to make... in short, that vision has become reality with the launching of our Premium Icons, which are archival quality mounted icons with "kovcheg".
These icons have the same finishing details as our popular high quality icons, but the printed icon is printed to paper rather than canvas and the face of the icon is slightly recessed forming a "kovcheg" or "ark" feature commonly found on handpainted icons. The premium icon quality prints are mounted to 1" thick solid poplar panels reinforced with red oak support splines ("shponki", in Russian). The panels are finished in a light cherry stain and have a shellacked finish with handpainted borders. Premium Icons from Damascene Gallery are the icons we wanted to make when we launched our business and we are overjoyed to offer them to you, our customers.
Unlike the silk screen icons they are often compared to, our Premium Icons are printed using pigment based, archival quality inks using conventional printing technologies, which enables Damascene Gallery to gradually make the majority of our icon collection available with the Premium option. Premium icons are available in 6", 9" and 12" vertical sizes and we are working to add a 16" size in the near future. Additionally, a framed variant will be added in early 2020, so keep an eye out for that as well.
