Using a vertical battery holder on a small pcb with a diode, a non-rechargeable coin cell can be used to provide battery backup on old motherboards and other boards that used those old batteries that eventually leak, risking circuit board corrosion.
The diode prevents the motherboard from trying to charge the battery when it's powered up, while allowing the battery to provide backup power to retain data when the system is powered down.
