3 Lessons Learned About The Camera Module 3 & The Raspberry Pi 5 — Why Is The Picture Purple?! 📷🤔
Even though I put a lot of thought into my Raspberry Pi 5 camera project, there were big mistakes in choosing the right camera. I thought a NoIR (No Infrared Filter) and a wide angle view was the best combo.
While I like the ultra-wide 120 degree angle of view, I'm not sure if I'd pick NoIR again. At least, it didn't work without a dedicated infrared light. It was just dark. And in normal visible light, there was a purple tint. You can even see it in this video. My shirt is dark blue, not bright purple.
Another problem was with the cable. Since I have a newer Raspberry Pi 5, the camera connection is a different size. I needed to order a different cable.
The third problem was software. I didn't want to use an app. I wanted to try writing my own software. Could I control the camera manually. This part was nice, as the terminal command “rpicam-still” or “rpicam-jpeg” could be used to take pictures, while “rpicam-vid” could be used to create videos.
There are lots of options, so that part involved a little bit of work. But overall, I could see how this project could grow into something more advanced. It was nice getting technical with a Linux project.
But unfortunately, I got discouraged with all of these little problems. I didn't finish my project. That's the point of the video. Hopefully it helps you to avoid picking the wrong camera module and hopefully it motivates you to finish your Raspberry Pi project.
