Join us behind the scenes as we prepare for the grand opening of our highly anticipated exhibition ” Goya and Munch: Modern Prophecies ” at MUNCH, on display 28.10.2023 – 11.02.2024.
🧑🎨🧑🏼🎨 Two artists from opposite ends of Europe – Spanish Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) and Norwegian Edvard Munch (1863-1944). They lived different lives in two separate historical eras, but what brings them together?
🖌️ Our upcoming exhibition titled “Goya and Munch: Modern Prophecies” takes as its starting point that it was not until Munch’s lifetime that Goya gained international fame. Munch’s generation of European artists were amazed and inspired by Goya’s art, his techniques, and the mysterious side of the human imagination. For them, Goya was a prophet of the new art.
🖼️ Although it has proved difficult to confirm whether Munch himself was directly inspired by Goya’s art, they both shared certain artistic interests. The exhibition “Goya and Munch: Modern Prophecies” uncovers fascinating parallels between the two artists, by focusing on how they addressed themes relating to society, war, faith and superstition. This exhibition also includes several works generously loaned from the @nasjonalmuseet in Oslo: two paintings by Edvard Munch (Study of a Head, 1883 and Julius Meier-Graefe, 1894) and a complete first edition of Francisco de Goya’s series The Caprices (80 prints).
