In this video, we cover the Local Repository and Local History features in Visual Studio Code, as well as show how to publish a branch to GitHub. I also occasionally show GitHub Desktop as a reference.
A reminder that a GitHub account is COMPLETELY FREE, and you can always make repositories private. However if you're working with materials that you do not have the rights to distribute, you may prefer to keep your changes local. Thankfully, Visual Studio Code and GitHub Desktop have tools to facilitate this.
Whether you're working on a quick demo or a big project with multiple contributors, having a Git repository can have a huge impact on making forward progress. Having an easy-to-read history of all the changes in the project is great both to see how far you've come, but also to provide an escape hatch if you blow up the project and need to revert to an earlier version.
