Giving young people the chance to make TV programmes about the things that affect them.
The Kids TV Programme was set up to engage young people and make creating TV programmes accessible to them. We achieve this with 'the portable TV studio', which can be used by schools and youth groups.
'The portable TV studio' is set up inside an hour allowing the whole day for pupils/youth groups to create TV and videos in their own environments. The studio, including: 2-3 professional video cameras, lighting, microphones, green screen, vision mixer, sound mixer and monitors can fit in to any classroom.
Young people take ownership of the whole production; they are in front and behind the camera with each pupil given a role to play, ie. Camera person, floor manager, sound technician, vision mixer etc. A brief training session is given to the pupils before they go live and they are guided throughout by media professionals.
So, what will their programmes be about?
What will they have to say? As well as learning practical media skills such as: how to use a camera and vision mixing, its also a way to engage young people and promote awareness of important issues such as:
• Sexual health
• Alcohol
• Drug awareness
• Healthy eating
• Anti-bullying
• Anti-racism
• Teenage pregnancy
• Anti-smoking
Pupils will be able to address these issues in whatever type of programme they choose to make (there are also assignments to choose from). This parallel learning technique is an effective way of encouraging them to make the right lifestyle choices in the future.
