The coffee grounds left over after brewing your coffee are rich in nitrogen, an essential nutrient for plants. Instead of throwing them away in the household trash, you can reuse them sustainably by applying small amounts directly to the soil of your plants.
However, the most efficient way to use coffee grounds is to add them to a compost bin. This allows them to decompose along with other organic waste, enriching the final compost. You can even discard the paper filter along with the grounds if you use disposable filters.
It's important to note that if you brew coffee with sweetened water, these grounds should not be applied directly to the soil. The sugar can cause nutritional imbalances, such as excessive nitrogen consumption by bacteria stimulated by the presence of sugar.
