"Do you ever miss it?" Joe asked one day. It's been over four months since the beginning of his and Victoria's friendship and it couldn't be any better. They were laying by a stream they found a few weeks ago and were cloud watching.
"Miss what?"
"New York."
Victoria didn't answer at first, but after thinking she quietly said yes.
"What do you miss most?" Joe turned his head and saw her playing with her necklace. The one with the golden apple.
"The lights," she said.
"What?" He propped himself on his elbows and looked down at her. Her eyes were closed and she was smiling.
"The lights, the music, the city never sleeps, you know." Victoria peeked one eye open and laughed at the confusion on Joe's face.
"But why'd you leave it?"
"You should know," she said simply and closed both eyes again.
Joe wracked his memory for any time Victoria may have mentioned her leaving New York but came up with nothing. His older brother Kevin was right, you do have to listen to women. "Sorry, Tori," he said tentatively, "but I've got nothing."
Victoria tapped a finger to her nose. "Think," she said. "I've never told you why I've left. But I have told you what I miss."
"You left because of the noise." It wasn't much of a question.
"Correcto."
"But why? If you miss it so much?" Joe could never understand Victoria, but that's what he liked about her.
"Sometimes you need a break from all the lights."
"It's been four years."
"So?"
"That's not a break." Joe looked at her incredulously. "A break is a couple of weeks, not four years. You know how small this town is. Once you live here you don't get out. You're stuck here."
"That's what you think."
"What?"
Victoria turned to her side and propped herself up like Joe. "I'm a get out."
"What are you talking about?"
"After graduation I'm going back to New York. You wanna know why?" She looked him straight in the eye as he nodded his head. "One day we're gonna be famous."
Victoria fell back down with a grin on her face.
"Have you gotten into Mr. Derard's weed stash?" Joe laughed, not taking her seriously.
"Laugh all you want, but we both know it's true.
"Really?"
"Really."
"And how do you purpose we're going to do that?"
"Easy. I'm a certified actress and-"
"Well, that's got you covered," muttered Joe.
"AND," Victoria went on, pretending not to hear him, "you WILL be one of the GREATEST rock stars that EVER LIVED."
"Seriously, Tori, what makes you think I can even be a rock star?"
"Simple. I've seen you writing in your notebook in practically every class."
"You've been reading my notebook?" Joe could practically feel the heat in his face and was thankful her eyes were closed.
"Not reading, glancing." She opened her eyes and looked up at him. "You're very talented, Joe."
"It's nothing. Just something me and my brothers have been working on. It's not like I'm a pursue a career on it."
"But you should."
"And why would I want to do that?"
"Because you love it."
