Tableau - Live vs. Extract Data Connections
There are two ways to connect data in Tableau, you can either use a live connection to the data source or Tableau data extract (tde or hyper).
Tableau data extract (tde or hyper) is simply a snapshot of data optimized for aggregation and loaded into system memory to be quickly recalled for visualization – essentially the extracts tend to be much faster than live connections hence suitable when working with slow databases.
Some of the reasons you would prefer extract data over live data connection
i. When working with slow databases – using the Tableau extract data will improve the speed at which queries are executed.
ii. When working offline – when you need to stay on top your projects while off the organizations intranet (when travelling or on holiday) extracting such data ensures that you keep your projects progressing.
Live data connection – Here, Tableau data source contains a direct connection to the underlying data – meaning Tableau relies on the database for all queries and can update in real-time.
Some of the reasons you would prefer live connection over Extract connection
i. When you need last minute data in your analysis (real data updates).
ii. When you’re connected to a faster database.
