In early April, my friend Jaimy and I set out on what turned out to be the wildest trip either of us had ever experienced. Alongside a legendary guide — LT — we ventured into the bush for 13 days, sleeping in tents and living among the wildlife. Countless encounters: a hyena stealing our gear, hippos grazing near our tents, lions walking right past us. Pretty crazy for a city boy like me, ha!
During our stay, we had the chance to film so many beautiful moments. I couldn’t be more stoked about what we saw. I shot everything on the Sony FX6, FX3, and the Sony 400–800mm f/6.3–8.0 Ultrazoom. Sometimes the animals came so close that I could get away with just the Sony 70–200 GM II and a 1.4x teleconverter.
The tricky part about Botswana in April is that it’s transitioning from the wet to the dry season. Everything is still green, and there are plenty of natural waterholes inland — which means animals don’t have to gather in one spot. So, you end up seeing fewer animals overall. But the ones you do find? Absolute magic.
