This video is a review of a July ‘22 article in the
Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. The article is titled,
Comparison of Sensorimotor Integration and Skill-Related Physical Fitness Components Between College Athletes With and Without Forward Head Posture and can be reached here, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35894...
In this fascinating study, 100 asymptomatic college athletes were looked at and divided into the Forward Head Posture and the non-Forward Head Posture group using the Cranial Vertebral Angle.
An inch or more of Forward Head Posture (FHP) put them in the FHP group and there were 50 in each group.
They looked at sensorimotor integration where a sensory stimuli at the wrist, arm or finger is measured and seen the way it is processed in the higher centers of the brain. Some of the questions answered were as follows:
The Timed Sprint T-test- Here someone sprints 10 meters from point A to point B, 5 meters to the left, 10 meters to the right, 5 meters back to the center and then 10 meters back to the start forming a capital letter “T”.
Vertical Leap Test- Simply jumping up. This is a skill used in a lot of sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, football, lacrosse, hurdles, etc.
Stork Balance Test- Balancing on an unsteady surface.
Dynamic Stretch Balance Test- A three dimensional stretch/balance test measuring agility.
The results:
Timed Sprint T-test- FHP GROUP 10% slower.
Vertical Leap 9cm higher in the non-FHP group
Stork Balance Test- Non-FHP group was able to stand for a significant number of seconds longer.
Dynamic Stretch Balance Test- Non-FHP group was more agile
All of the results showed as the posture worsened the markers for athletic success went down. Humans have an optimal head position in the sagittal plane with the head being positioned over the shoulders. When it is out in front of the shoulders, human performance diminishes.
Chiropractors often say that altered spinal biomechanics cause more than just degeneration and pain. None of these athletes had pain. Chiropractic is good for balance, speed and strength even if you are asymptomatic.
Is your chiropractor measurably correcting your spine?
Find a chiropractor that does the CBP technique. You can find a doctor near you at https://idealspine.com/directory/. Also, the Pettibon System is another corrective technique that can help you fix your Forward Head Posture and can be reached at www.pettibonsystem.com.
If you do not have a corrective chiropractor near you, set up a telehealth call with Dr Fields. He will advise you on the proper x-rays to take and guide you through your individualized home-care process. https://fieldsfamilychiro.janeapp.com...
If you are near Dr Fields in Northern California, book an in-person appointment.
