We walk through the entire process step by step, from creating your free Cisco Networking Academy account all the way to launching your first empty topology.
No skipped steps, no assumed knowledge. If you can follow instructions, you'll have a working lab environment by the end of this video.

Minimum:
Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or newer, or Ubuntu 20.04 or newer

📥 DOWNLOAD PROCESS — QUICK OVERVIEW
Go to the Cisco Networking Academy website and create a free account
Enroll in the free Packet Tracer introductory course
Navigate to the downloads section
Pick the installer that matches your OS — 64-bit is standard for modern machines
Download and run the installer
Sign in with your Cisco Networking Academy credentials on first launch
🪟 WINDOWS INSTALLATION
Run the .exe installer as administrator
Accept the license agreement
Choose the installation directory — the default works fine
Let the installer finish, then launch Packet Tracer from the Start menu
🍎 MACOS INSTALLATION
Open the downloaded .dmg file
Drag Packet Tracer into the Applications folder
First launch may require approval in System Settings under Privacy and Security
Sign in with your Networking Academy account
🐧 LINUX INSTALLATION (UBUNTU AND DEBIAN-BASED)
Extract the downloaded .tar.gz archive
Open a terminal in the extracted folder
Run the install script with sudo
Launch from the applications menu or with the packettracer command
⚠️ COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEMS AND FIXES
Problem: "Login failed" on first launch
Fix: Make sure you're using the same email and password as your Cisco Networking Academy account. The simulator validates your account online on first use.
Problem: Installer won't run on macOS
Fix: Go to System Settings, then Privacy and Security, and approve the app. macOS blocks unsigned installers by default.
Problem: Packet Tracer launches but closes immediately
Fix: Update your graphics drivers. Packet Tracer uses OpenGL and older drivers can cause crashes.
Problem: "Guest login" prompt every time
Fix: Sign in with your real Networking Academy account — guest mode has saved session limits.
✅ VERIFYING YOUR INSTALLATION
Once Packet Tracer is open, we'll do a quick sanity check together:
Drag a router into the workspace
Drag a PC into the workspace
Connect them with a cable
Confirm the devices power up and the cable turns green
