Friends, I am incredibly proud to announce that my documentary "Nuclear Lessons" has been shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival. While working on this film, I realized how fragile our world is and how important it is to cherish it.
This is Lyadov, and today I present to you my documentary about the most terrifying place on Earth, which for 40 years served as a testing ground for the most devastating weapon of mass destruction ever invented by humanity—nuclear bombs.
In total, from 1949 to 1989, nearly 500 nuclear bombs were tested here. Leading Soviet scientists and researchers studied the impact of nuclear weapons on urban settlements. They built model cities with real buildings and even metro stations to see and assess the consequences. Researchers identified zones where people would die immediately, zones where people might survive but go blind, and zones where people would survive but their descendants would suffer from mutations for many years. They conducted experiments, analyzed the results, and then, judging by how things look today, the entire project was abandoned, as if no one cared. But today I will meet people who will never forget a single detail of those times. They witnessed those nuclear explosions with their own eyes and paid with their health for these experiments, which were supposed to teach us something.

This is Lyadov and How People Live, from Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan.
