Leonie Pernet’s 2021 album Le Cirque de Consolation finds new life with a collection of dance floor remixes. First up from Le Club de Consolation is a fierce and pumping French house and electro reimagining of “Les Chants de Maldoror” by Institube/Edbangers producer Para One. The remix emphasizes what makes the original great, namely Pernet’s masterful pop songwriting and reference to the 19th century Surrealist movement.
Para One’s remix takes an almost tribal/cultish take on Leonie’s original, highlighting the darkness of the source material; a 19th century French cantos that inspired generations of french musicians, from Noir Desir to Serge Gainsbourg. Making a perfect b-side to Cardini/Jee’s remix of Missing Love from July, “Les Chants...” features a robotically driving four on the floor club beat and a vintage analog synthesizer getting a sever workout on the bassline.
