This video focuses on Clause 7 Explained, precisely element 7.1.4. The clause requires: "The organization shall determine, provide and maintain the environment necessary for the operation of its processes and to achieve conformity of products and services." Following the requirement, the standard provides examples of what may be part of the environment: social, psychological, and physical
Social factors may include:
non-discriminatory,
calm, and
non-confrontational atmosphere
Psychological conditions can consist of
stress-reducing environment,
burnout prevention,
and others
Physical conditions comprise:
temperature and humidity,
light and appropriate ventilation,
hygiene, noise, and others
At the end of the list, the standard wisely notes that "These factors can differ substantially depending on the products and services provided." Brilliant! Of course, these factors will depend on the products! We cannot produce silicone chips or medical devices without a clean room, and we cannot manufacture explosives without strict humidity control or make jewelry with insufficient lighting. And on and on – the environment aids in making particular products. This is why we need clause 7 explained.
While the environment's social and psychological aspects are seemingly under an organization's control, physical conditions may present challenges. Once, I was on a team to audit a large shipyard, and it was mid-summer in the southeast of the US. The thermometer showed a high-90th with a humidity of about the same. Having workers in the yard under these conditions required particular actions from the organization:
more frequent breaks in air-conditioned areas,
drinking water fountains,
shower facilities after the end of shifts and others
