The Cardinals were in the thick of a pennant race in the National League, with Bob Gibson taking the mound. Gibson, who was returning from an injury earlier in the season, aimed to lead the team closer to the postseason. For the Phillies, Rick Wise was tasked with keeping a potent Cardinals lineup in check. The Phillies were not in playoff contention, but Wise hoped to finish the season strong in what had been an otherwise challenging year for Philadelphia.
