A single product term (minterm) is an implicant in SOP form.

A single sum term (maxterm) is an implicant in POS form.

Various types of implicants

Prime Implicants,

Essential Prime Implicants (EPI) and

Redundant Prime Implicants (RPI).

This video explains the method to find the number of PI, EPI, and RPI in a given Boolean function. This type of question is mostly expected in competitive exams.

The number of PI, EPI, and RPI for a Boolean function is determined using a K- map.

All the possible groups of cells containing 1 (in case of minterms) or groups of cells containing 0 (in case of maxterms) become the Prime Implicants (PI)

The groups that cover at least one minterm that can’t be covered by any other prime implicant is the Essential prime implicants (EPI). EPIs always appear in the final solution

The groups for which each of its minterm is already covered by other prime implicants are the Redundant Prime Implicants (RPI)s. RPIs usually do not appear in the final solution
