Sad news from the queen of kanto, Nurhan Damcıoğlu... Nurhan Damcıoğlu has passed away due to heart failure. The Turkish kanto singer, vocal artist, and theater and film actress passed away at the age of 82.
WHO IS NURHAN DAMCIOĞLU?
She was born into a family of nine children. Her father owned an open-air cinema, and her mother worked as a seamstress at the state opera house. Through her mother's initiative, she entered the children's department of the State Theaters General Directorate at the age of nine, thus receiving theater training from a very young age. She took ballet lessons and worked at the Radio Children's Club for nine years. From the age of 16, she performed in the State Theater. Meanwhile, she graduated from Ankara Cebeci Secondary School. With the guidance of Cüneyt Gökçer, she came to Istanbul in 1965. She worked with the Istanbul Theater, Ayfer Feray Theater, Gülriz Sururi-Engin Cezzar Theater, Muammer Karaca Theater, and the Mücap Ofluoğlu Group. She first heard Kanto from Toto Karaca. With the encouragement of Mücap Ofluoğlu, she sang kanto for the first time in 1969. She then abandoned theater entirely and devoted herself entirely to kanto. Thus, she became Türkiye's first female Muslim kanto singer.
After this, she began performing at the Maksim Nightclub. Here, she had the opportunity to work with artists such as Zeki Müren, Sevim Tuna, and Behiye Aksoy. After the September 12th coup, she was among those subjected to surveillance. With the emergence of private channels in the 1990s, she found the opportunity to work on television again.
The kantos and duets she compiled are still performed and sung.
