Welcome to Camp Monstrous
“Welcome to Camp Monstrous” is an animation dedicated to teaching children why nothing good comes from racism as well as the importance of accepting one another’s differences. The idea for this animation came about due to the state of the world and political discourse of the time as the creation of it took place during the Coronavirus pandemic and after the tragic passing of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. The animation depicts monsters of different races that do not like one another, rather than humans, in an effort to appeal to children.
This animation was created in the Fall 2020 semester by the group called the “Animation Squad” which consisted of the students Alex Parra, Autumn Truax, and Seleena Shrestha from the school Cal State University Channel Islands. The “Animation Squad” created this animation for their senior project for their capstone class under the advising of their professor, Matt Furmanski. As the creation of this animation took place during the Coronavirus pandemic the students were required to collaborate from the safety of their own homes. Despite the challenge of being unable to meet in person, through online communication, the group still managed to create a successful animation, which we hope is enjoyable as well as beneficial to children.
