Netscape Navigator was the best popular browser in history. Lost two wars, after the first one it was called Mozilla, and then it became the FireFox browser. Today we will talk about the browser that opened the Internet to the world - Netscape Navigator: history and creators, scandals and technologies, legacy and influence.

Five reasons why NN is the main browser in history:
1) It was the most popular and opened the Internet to us
2) This browser supported graphics, fonts, tables, the Internet became more user-friendly
3) Netscape Navigator stood at the forefront of technology, partly created today's Internet
4) The authors of the browser became catalysts for the development of the entire industry and still influence
5) The Netscape Communications company became a successful business and showed the world that the Internet is a powerful tool for communications and business

CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS

1993: programmer Marc Andreessen and businessman James Clark meet. They decide to create an Internet business, after searching for a business model they come to a paid Internet browser.

1994: In the fall, the beta version is released, and immediately 1.0. Interest is heated up with the help of powerful PR, and the company also successfully enters into alliances with partners (plugins, standards, protocols).

1995: The company shows outstanding results: almost 30 million users and about 15 million dollars in revenue in the first 8 months.

1995: In August, Netscape Communications Inc. goes public. Capitalization is 2.9 billion dollars. Wall Street is in shock. Everyone who has not invested in the Internet business begins to bite their elbows, and that day was called the Netscape Moment (the moment when the world realized that there is a new sector of the economy)

1995: After the IPO, the docom bubble begins to form. Non-professional investors, having looked at the IPO, at everyone's activity on the Internet, at the success of Dell with their online store, begin to actively invest money in any Internet companies.

1995: Windows 95 is released in August, which will become the standard for mass PCs for 30 years, and Microsoft releases the Internet Explorer browser, which is the beginning of the first browser war.

1996: Many technologies and companies related to the Internet are shooting up. Netscape Communications' revenue is growing, the Internet is growing, Java technology is developing (there are many technologies, and this one will play an important role in the war).

1997: Netscape's revenue is falling, since every six months the Navigator browser is losing 10-20% of the market, and Internet Explorer is increasing its share. Microsoft's methods are simple, they immediately made their browser free, and they are also a monopoly and put IE on all their operating systems.

1998: Hearings in the US Senate are going on all year: Microsoft will be accused of monopolistic collusion and violation of competition.

1998: Meanwhile, although the antitrust court is in favor of Netscape, in fact by mid-1998 they have already ceded more than 50% of the market, they are suffering losses, their business model is falling apart. Victory in the battle and loss in the war.

1998: AOL (America OnLine) Corporation acquires Netscape, and Mozilla employees manage to make the code free before the acquisition. This is how the Mozilla project is born.

2000: The war is lost, Netscape's share is approaching 5%, IE's share is 90-95%. This is how the first browser war ended.

2004: The FireFox browser is released based on the Gecko engine, that is, based on Mozilla. That is, Mozilla FireFox is the grandson of the Netscape Navigator browser. And as you can see, the grandfather lost two wars, but remained the most influential in history and the only browser engine that is still developing.
