Harley Engine Noise Might Be Your Drivetrain Not Holding Up
Horrible noises from your Harley engine during starting may not be the engine at all but your drivetrain not hold up. Your starting system relies partially on the drive train to start your Harley engine, if one critical component can't handle the push back from the compression in the engine you've got a real problem. Harley-Davidson found this out with the Twin Cam 96 and carrying over the old compensator design. The old compensator simply couldn't hold pushing the larger pistons through the compression stroke. The pistons would bounce back and cause the engine to back lash, this became worse over time. The same thing is highly probable with big bore upgrades and compression increases!!
