Peter Rosei on his novel Vienna Metropolis: "When I embarked on the novel project that would later be titled Vienna Metropolis, it was vaguely clear to me that I had to somehow capture the melting pot nature of the city—Vienna has always been a city of newcomers—along with the social geography of the whole—the connections, indeed the tensions, between center and periphery, for example—these two fundamental components linked by historical development, embedded in the flow of time or tossed about by its eddies. Naturally, the city's shape, its hills, valleys, and terraces, as well as the character and changing seasons, the climate, play a significant role. And let's not forget the light; the specific light of each area presents things to us in a unique way—in their color, but also in the presence of their volumes. Since a novel's plot is always rooted in characters, familial and Psychological components should also be considered. Literature, in conjunction with the often highly useful studies and models of science, is an invaluable tool for understanding, especially regarding the complexities of everyday life. And then there's the music!
