On the anniversary of the conquest of the highest peak on the planet - Chomolungma - Robinzon.TV decided to check: do Kharkov residents know geography?
The city dwellers did not disappoint: most of them know not only the name of the greatest mountain, but also the almost exact number of meters by which it rises above sea level.
We hasten to inform the rest that the highest peak of the Himalayas and the world - Chomolungma (Sagarmatha, Everest) was first conquered on May 29, 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Norgay Tenzing. It rises 8848 meters above sea level.
Chomolungma - "Mother - Goddess of the World" - as the inhabitants of Tibet call it or Sagarmatha - "Lord of the World", as the Nepalese call it - is a giant mountain range located on the border of Nepal and Tibet. It attracted the attention of topographers more than a century ago. The first of them was George Everest, and it was his name that was later given to the peak in honor of his geographical merits.
The first plan to climb Everest was developed in 1893, and the first attempt to conquer the mountain was made in 1921. It took more than 30 years and the bitter experience of thirteen unsuccessful ascents to conquer Everest for the first time.
On May 29, 1953, Hillary and Tenzing climbed the highest peak of the Himalayas on the border of Nepal and India, raising the flags of Great Britain, Nepal, India and the UN there. The news of this reached the rest of the world only four days later - June 2, 1953, on the day of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
The Queen of Great Britain awarded Hillary a knighthood and the right to add the title "Sir" to her name. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, who was not a citizen of the British Commonwealth, received a medal from the Queen.
Edmund Hillary devoted many years of his life to working with the Sherpas in Nepal, and in 2003, when the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the conquest of Everest, the New Zealander was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Nepal.
