There is a need to excite and interest young minds in real STEM education, innovation, and hardware development and test. Historically, every generation's interest in technology is inspired by an emerging technology. In the early 1900s it was radio... by the 50s it was hotrods, followed by muscle cars. Soon this was followed by computers... Today, the hot new tech frontier is drones!
Drone design and construction combines a number of technologies ranging from communication to propulsion. This can be facilitated by STEM education, 3D printing of drones, and experimentation in physics with low cost hardware and software. This presentation examines current state of drone technology and what is available to garage inventors...
I was fortunate that my father was an engineer, he had a shop, and he let me work with his tools and equipment at a young age. He also bought me somewhat dangerous chemicals, I was allowed to have knives and a BB gun, and I could ride horses that at times would throw me (luckily only bruises and no broken bones). Today, the challenge is to provide an opportunity to embrace a culture that stimulates young minds. This is a first step!
