Cut Before You Boost |
Ideally you want to leave boosting frequencies till later in the mix. Because if your first EQ is just boosting frequencies, then you may have to redo your gain staging process, you will be adding more volume in decibels, making the vocals louder and adding unnecessary frequencies.
The reason you should cut before boosting, is to keep your signal flow clean. It simply gives you more headroom to work with. And most of the time, if you want a frequency to be more present, then all you really need to do is cut the opposing frequency range/band.
