For decades, parallel distributed processing (PDP) computer simulations have been a powerful tool for constructing models of object recognition and of impairments of visual object knowledge. Here, cognitive neuroscientist Tim Rogers walks us through some of the principles of neural network modeling, and illustrates how these work in a model that can be trained to recognize objects and their associated verbal labels.
