Located in the county of Warwickshire, and around 12 miles southeast of Coventry, is the town of Southam.
In 1227 a market charter was granted to Southam by the Prior of Coventry. The town became known for its coin minting industry, where small denomination coins were produced from lead or copper, as an alternative to the more valuable silver coins in frequent use around the medieval era.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St James. This dates back to the 14th century with additions up to the 16th century, and some 19th century alterations. The church is Grade I listed.
In August 1642 the Battle of Southam took place on the outskirts of the town. Whilst only a skirmish, it is claimed to have been the first battle of the English Civil War, predating the Battle of Edgehill by two months. The Royalists defeated a small Parliamentarian force who had been blocking the road to Warwick.
Of particular architectural note in the town is Manor House. First seen prominently just before the 9-minute mark, this dates from the 16th century, and is understood to have housed Charles I two nights before the aforementioned Battle of Edgehill. The timber framing had been hidden under a lime render until 2007 when a piece of it fell off, and a careful operation to remove the rest of it followed.
In 1895 a railway station opened about a mile and a half north of Southam, namely Southam and Long Itchington. This was situated on the Weedon to Leamington Spa branch line, but was closed to passengers in 1958, and to freight in 1965. Today, public transport to Southam consists of direct buses from Leamington Spa, Rugby and various other nearby locations.
