The biggest mistake I made after looking back on 12 years of running a video business is...
*Dumroll*...
Focusing too much on the creative and technical, while neglecting the business side.
It's an easy mistake to make. After all, you probably got into the industry because you love the creative side.
We all want to be able to work with the best clients, on exciting creative projects, with big budgets to match.
But to make progress with your video business and escape the overwork, the nightmare clients, the small budgets, and financial uncertainty, you have to put the creative and technical to one side. At least to begin with.
You have to learn to speak 'business'.
And partner with the client on a business level.
Only then can you stand out from the competition and demonstrate to your clients how much value your work will bring to their business.
Focus on the things that matter to their business and help them create value and return on investment.
Only when you do that will you create raving fans who keep coming back for more.
When you focus on the business side first, you'll create more time to work on the creative things you love, you'll create happier customers, and greater financial security and consistency.
