Porcupines are fascinating animals armed with powerful defenses. They have sharp quills; although these quills are not venomous, they can be deceptively dangerous due to their tiny barbs, which make them difficult to remove from the skin. When threatened, porcupines will lift and loosen their quills to make them easier to remove. Their quills can cause painful infection and injury. Dogs that mishandle them often become adversaries to porcupines. Each quill has microscopic barbs that can become embedded at the slightest touch. Therefore, if a predator gets too close, the barbs on the quills cause them to embed themselves in the skin. This happens so quickly that it seems as if the quills are flying off the porcupine. However, porcupines do not eject their quills.
