The culture of the Egyptians involved a polytheistic religion with more than 40 Gods, among them various different forms such as animals, humans and even a mixture of them.
They believed in life after death and even had an optimistic view about it, and the mummification process is linked to this, since they wanted to preserve the body to live this "other side," so to speak. If the heart weighed more than a feather, there would be no place for the realm of the dead; if it was lighter, proving that yes, the person was good, then yes, they could enjoy the afterlife.
