What is necrosis?
Necrosis indicates cell or tissue death in the body. It is known that the necrosis process also involves inflammation at the site.
There are several causes of necrosis, including decreased blood supply or lack of oxygenation with the presence of toxins and enzymes that lead to cell death.
Necrosis and apoptosis are different processes. Necrosis is the final and irreversible stage of cell or group of cells (tissue) death. Apoptosis is the death of a cell that is then absorbed by the body itself. Apoptosis causes transformation, for example, in the breast after breastfeeding.
Programmed cell death is called apoptosis.
What are the types of necrosis?
There are different types of necrosis:
Coagulative necrosis: caused by ischemia, decreased or suspended blood supply to a specific region. The affected tissue has the appearance of a clot.
Liquefactive necrosis: the damaged tissue takes on a liquid appearance. It usually occurs when cells that are part of the nervous system are damaged.
Caseous necrosis: white or yellowish in color, similar to creamy cheese. Result of chronic, long-term injury.
Fat necrosis: affects fatty tissues, such as the pancreas and breast tissue, or may be the result of pancreatitis.
Coagulative necrosis: results from exposure to bacterial toxins or chemical agents.
