Learning to play in this style was tough for me, because my stubborn teenage brain didn't even want to consider deviating from Alternate Picking.
It was only after many years that I began to question this assumption, and the further I dug, the clearer things became.
Almost all of the Swedish Shredder's incredible songs rely on economy picking in one way or another. The good news is, Economy Picking is easier than you think, BUT it can be scary if you don't understand the systems at play.
The tone aspect is vital also. Essentially, the basic formula is a slightly driven Plexi with an DOD250 style overdrive pushing it. Together the two gain sources combine to make that sweet & frumpy tone that us Followers of the Fury have come to know and love. I used to think using two distortions at the same time was a crime, but now it's obvious how essential it is for achieving that buttery compression.
