Whereas pattern separation, the focus of the two narrated videos from Craig Stark, relates primarily to encoding information into LTM, the operation of pattern completion is associated with retrieval from LTM. After opening his narrated video with this collection’s only selfie, theoretical neuroscientist and neurophysiologist John Lisman describes a theory for how the unique circuitry of the hippocampus might support the retrieval of memories for sequential events. This is heady stuff, drawing on 100 year-old anatomical discoveries, state-of-the-art genetic “knock out” experiments, and sophisticated computational theory.
