Good: The form factor of the Roland R-07 makes very easy slip in your pocket. Front pockets, back pockets, jacket pockets it doesn't really matter because of the recorders size and shape it fits really well in pockets.
Good: The mic jack is at the top of the device so when you slip R-07 in your pocket the mic cable comes straight up and out of your pocket so you don't have to worry about the cable continuously bending and eventually fraying and getting damaged. You also don't have to worry about getting an angled adaptor to keep the mic cable straight to prevent it from getting snagged and coming out.
Good: The Roland R-07 offers Bluetooth connectivity so you can pair your earphones to it and wirelessly monitor recordings and or wirelessly listen to playback of your recordings. You can also pair the R-07 to your smartphone via the Roland R-07 Remote App and monitor the levels and make adjustments to the device remotely even while recording. This is really helpful if you put the recorder on a subject or place it away from you like on or near a stage. The only downside is you can't be paired to your phone and earphones at the same time, if you could the R-07 would be better than wireless mic systems in a number of ways and in some ways it already is.
Good: The Roland R-07 has a 1/4 20 thread on the bottom of it making it easy to mount on your camera or other places. So if you want to use the built-in stereo mics as sort of a on-camera shotgun mic you can.
Good: The R-07 has a lot of other cool features like rehearsal mode, different scene preset settings for recording different scenarios like concerts or speech and you can record high quality 96khz WAV files.
Bad: One of the things I would like to see changed on the Roland R-07 is the mic input. I really wish that the microphone port had a screw lock mechanism to protect against accidentally pulling the microphone out of the mic jack. The mic doesn't come out without very intentionally trying to pull it out but I would still like that additional peace of mind.
This other thing is I wish I could do is monitor the audio wirelessly through my Bluetooth earphones and use the app at the same time. You have to choose to do one or the other. If I could do both at the same time the Roland R-07 would be a really nice alternative to using a wireless mic system.
So, how does it compare against the competition? I currently own the Zoom F1 and have in the past owned the Tascam DR10. I have used the Zoom H1 but have never owned it. As far as price they are all about the same price at around $199 except for the Zoom H1 which is currently $79. The Roland and the Zoom H1 both have built-in stereo mics while the others have mic inputs that you have to use to get audio in. All of the devices are relatively small but the form factor of the Roland makes it the most portable second only to the tiny Tascam DR10. Even though the Roland is a little bigger than the Tascam I still prefer the R-07 because it uses two AA batteries instead of a single AAA battery like the Tascam DR10. The Tascam's battery life was terrible so much so I actually returned because of that reason. I also have a Tascam DR 70D field recorder and the battery life on that sucks too. I really like the audio that is produced with Tascam devices but I don’t think I will buy another one until they solve their power management issues. The Zoom F1 uses two AAA batteries but the Roland with it's two AA batteries seems to last forever. Also on both the Zoom F1 and the Tascam you have to go into the menus with a series of button pushes to make simple adjustments like raising or lowering the input levels but the Roland R-07 gives you a nice dedicated input levels button to quickly and easily make those adjustments.
All in all after trying numerous audio solutions for YouTube and vLogging purposes this is right now the best portable audio recorder for YouTube creators and vLoggers alike. Its small, light weight, packed with features, relatively inexpensive and most importantly it sounds really good. Oh yeah and if want your recorder to match your personal style the Roland R-07 comes in different colors.
