Filarfolket - Vintervalsen [Celtic Cover]
I love Scandinavian folk music and have been playing tunes from mostly Sweden, Norway, and Denmark for many years now, including with a musical friend of mine in a music duo aptly called Nordic Rumour - currently paused for pandemic reasons unfortunately...
Most tunes from Scandinavia are refreshingly different in terms of their rhythms and melodies, compared to Irish or Scottish tunes, for example. This track 'Vintervalsen' in particular is a beautiful tune written by Thomas Ringdahl of Filarfolket. In true Swedish fashion, the second section of this piece sits unusually across a 3-beat rhythm. I really play around with the beat in my arrangement, pushing and pulling between a waltz-like 3/4 and a faster 6/8 pace.
I always understood the title to translate into English as 'Winter Waltz'. But I will stand corrected if anyone knows any other meaning!
